YouTube is Working on “Shorts” Feature to Compete with TikTok

Rahul Rawat • Updated April 3, 2020 • 2 min read •

Popular video platform YouTube is reportedly working on a feature to compete short video platform TikTok. The feature will be called ‘Shorts’, which is currently under development and is expected to be launched by the end of 2020.

The ‘Shorts’ feature will compete with Tik Tok in the short video segment. Tik Tok has launched a few years ago and captured a large number of audience in a short time. To date the short video platform, Tik Tok has more than 5 Billion downloads.

The ‘Shorts’ from YouTube

The upcoming feature would be a part of the YouTube mobile app. The feature would appear in the form of a special feed. The feed will include a list of short video clips made by content creators. However, the feature is under development and reports suggest it may launch at the end of 2020.

Features of Shorts

As the name suggests, the app would let users create shorts videos up to 1 Min. And just like the other short video platform the app may let introduce new filters and effects. Users would able to Subscribe/Follow their favorite creators.

Does YouTube have an Upper Hand?

If you are wondering about this question, here is a personal opinion on that. Yes, YouTube has an upper hand and it is because of its multiple features. YouTube has a massive catalog of licensed songs and music, which would be used by creators. Further, YouTube may monetize ‘Short’ videos as it monetizes YouTube videos.

Well, I am not sure about monetizing videos from its early days but, it will surely monetize in order to attract its creators.

For now, we have limited information about the feature and how they will compete with its rival that we’ll look when the feature will live.

To recall you, this is not the first time YouTube is trying to compete with its rivals. In the past, to compete with Instagram the company had introduced a Stories feed in its app. The company also introduced a community tab, where creators can upload photos and posts to compete with its rivals.
