Reliance Jio always created trending offers, whether it is Summer Surprise or Dhan Dhana Dhan. Yesterday (09/07/17), the new Indian telecom entrant went trending, but for an entirely different reason.
A website, magicapk.com popped out of nowhere with a search field on the homepage and started leaking out details of Jio customers. We tried inputting a few Jio numbers into the field and got the name, telecom circle, and SIM activation information in return.
But Reliance Jio Says the Details of the Customers are Safe
Reliance Jio has now over 110 million customers all over the nation, and thus, the social media took the data breach as a dangerous incident. Many people tweeted out pointing to the insecure method the company uses to store details.
Jio took Aadhar number and email address for verification from their customers. Given that Aadhar is unique to every Indian and it contains the biometric details, we can’t let go of this database breach as a silly happening. Although we didn’t get Aadhar number and email address for our queries, PhoneArena managed to get them for a few Jio numbers they inputted.
As you read in the beginning, the website had a search field. You could put any Jio number into it to receive the customer details. The site stood live for a quite some time before Jio could strengthen the security. As we check the site now, it is unavailable and seems like the web host has suspended the account.

Until now, no one could figure out the people behind the breach. Of course, they are Indian, and they hosted the site on GoDaddy. The IP address of the site pointed to Mumbai.
Even though what happened to the details is scary to the customers, it is worth noting that some of the details the above-mentioned site displayed as leaked data is publicly available and used by third-party recharging sites. But the leakage of personal details like email address and Aadhar number created a fearful gesture among the customers.
Reliance Jio insisted that the data is safe. They have approached the law enforcement agencies to find the truth behind the breach. The official spokesperson of Jio repeatedly ensured the customer details was impossible to hack into.
Yeah, they could manage to take the site down. Still, we are not sure whether the sneakers have access to the customer details or not. We hope Jio has become cautious enough to build an extra layer of security against the data breaches.
