JioPhone 2 with QWERTY Keypad and WhatsApp Support Launched at Rs. 2,999

Rahul Krishnan • Updated July 6, 2018 • 3 min read •

You know how Jio revolutionized the Indian telecom industry. Apart from the network, they have introduced a basic phone with VoLTE support last year as well. Other carriers followed the same path to launch entry-level devices in collaborations with manufacturers.

Mukesh Ambani, the Chairman of Reliance Industries has released the next iteration of the device dubbed as JioPhone 2 with improved specifications.

Not everybody owns a smartphone in India. For the same reason, they couldn’t access high-speed internet connection and communication technologies. Jio has put an end to the scenario last year with the JioPhone as it provided everyone with VoLTE service despite being a basic feature device.

The company has improved the specifications and launched the next iteration as JioPhone 2. The first thing you notice on it is the QWERTY keypad and the 2.4-inch TFT screen. It clearly is an upgrade from the numeric keypad and small screen on the first model.

When it comes to the specifications, you get dual SIM card slots and as already mentioned, a 2.4-inch TFT display. The device runs on KAI OS. Under the hood, you will get 512 MB RAM and 4 GB internal storage. If you think 4 GB is feeble, you can always expand the storage up to 128 GB using an external SD card.

You know, for a feature phone, the optics aren’t the strongest grip. Yet, they have managed to pack in a 2 MP rear camera and a VGA shooter up front. The connectivity options include VoLTE, NFC, VoWiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and FM Radio. Moreover, they have also included a 2000 mAh battery. Apart from the QWERTY keypad, you get four-way navigation buttons and a dedicated button for voice commands as well.

The Google Assistant has made its way to the device earlier. If you remember, they have promised the arrival of WhatsApp as well. Now, with the release of JioPhone 2, we have seen them announcing the arrival of YouTube, Facebook, and WhatsApp too.

The price has been set to Rs. 2,999. The company says it’s only an introductory pricing. You can grab the device from the official website or MyJio app from August 15. In the event, Ambani has announced Monsoon Hungama Offer, which brings down the effective price of JioPhone from Rs. 1500 to Rs. 501. The offer will start on July 21.

They have also announced Jio GigaFiber, which will operate in 1100 cities in India. The registrations for the service will begin from August 15. They will prioritize the rollout of GigaFiber based on the interest they get from registrations.
