Here Comes the Notch Again! Xiaomi to Launch Mi 7 with a Top Notch and IR Camera

Rahul Krishnan • Updated March 13, 2018 • 3 min read •

The notch trend in the Android segment first started when Andy Rubin had come up with Essential Phone. However, he couldn’t up the popularity of the device. Apple went a level ahead to win the hearts of the gadget lovers with iPhone X’s display notch.

Once Apple does something, it becomes a standard. That’s what the notch-stories in the smartphone department show. We have already reported OnePlus to embed a display notch on their upcoming device. And now is the time for Xiaomi.

Xiaomi is literally the dominator in the budget segment, especially in India. They have broken the sales records multiple times here. When it comes to their premium models, the company couldn’t seem to have done much. Maybe, the Mi 7 will do just the opposite.

Two months ago, a leak had surfaced on the web, throwing light on the design of the upcoming smartphone from Xiaomi. Nonetheless, it didn’t have a notch on top of the display. Going by the Snapdragon 845 launch event, we anticipated the Chinese smartphone company will take away the feat of launching the first device with the latest chipset. It didn’t happen!

It is believed that the reason why Xiaomi delays the launch is due to a major design change. The recent leak suggests the exact same thing.

As you can see in the image given above, the source code hints at the possibility of having a display notch. In build.prop, a property named ro.miui.notch has got the value 1 (true). Of course, it clearly confirms the presence of the notch.

The MIUI keyguard app also contains a new feature, called OpenIRCamera. MIUI’s face unlocks calls this feature several time. For the same reason, we can expect a Face ID-like unlocking method on Mi 7.

When it comes to the specifications, we expect it will have a 6.01-inch full HD+ (2160x 1080 pixels resolution). Of course, we can see the latest Android Oreo, out of the box. The rear dual camera setup measures 20 MP along with 12 MP. Xiaomi already got hold of the bokeh effect on Redmi Note 5 Pro. So, we might see an improved version of the same here. The speculations suggest the battery capacity is 4480 mAh.

We don’t know the details of the launch yet. Neither do we get any confirmation about the pricing. But when we do, you can read it here. Stay tuned!
