Google fires its employees over protest due to ongoing deal with the Israeli Government
Google has fired around 20 employees over them doing protests at the firm’s New York and California offices. They previously fired around 28 employees over the same protest-related issue. If we combine the number of fired employees, we will get a figure close to 50. Well, around 9 employees were not only fired but were later arrested in their US divisions as well.
The employees were protesting because of the recently signed Project Nimbus by the giant. The Project Nimbus is a $1.2 billion worth of Israeli Government’s cloud computing contract that includes Amazon. The employees were unhappy with this project because of the ongoing war between Gaza and Israel. Some of them also did a sit-in protest at the CEO Thomas Kurain’s office. However, they were later removed by the local law-forcing authorities.
They also sent a memo to all of their employees that were fired. The starting few lines of the memo read
behavior like this has no place in our workplace and we will not tolerate it. The overwhelming majority of our employees do the right thing. If you’re one of the few who are tempted to think we’re going to overlook conduct that violates our policies, think again. The company takes this extremely seriously, and we will continue to apply our longstanding policies to take action against disruptive behavior — up to and including termination
This signifies that Google is very serious when it comes to the enforcement of its in-office laws. Although the firm promotes free conversation and debate, Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, has cautioned staff members that there are boundaries to this.
He reminded his staff that this was a critical period for the company and asked them to avoid having political conversations at work.
