Have you ever thrown your smartphone into a bucket full of water? or maybe in a swimming pool? There are high chances that you have not. But when it comes to resolving this, almost every one of you has heard about drying out smartphones using the famous rice method. It’s not limited to iPhones, almost every other user has once heard or maybe even tried this once.
For ages, we’ve heard about it, and the internet is flooded with videos and articles claiming that many users fixed their water-damaged smartphones by submerging or keeping them inside a container filled with uncooked rice.
The idea behind this is straightforward; the rice acts as a desiccant, absorbing the moisture caused due to water from the internals of the device. This is not false, but experts from Apple have a different take on this. They have even released a statement suggesting their users refrain from using rice to dry their wet or water-damaged iPhones.
Why doesn’t Apple want its users to rely on this rice-drying method?
In their official support document, the Cupertino-based tech giant has explicitly mentioned that using the rice to dry or repair water-damaged iPhones won’t do any good to the device, rather it may damage it as the small particles of the rice can enter into the internal hardware.
Apple isn’t wrong here. While rice does aid in moisture absorption, its benefits are negligible at best due to how slowly it does so. Hence, it doesn’t make any sense if the brand is suggesting it not to do so.
Apple suggests an improved approach for handling iPhones harmed by water. The manufacturer recommends users immediately turn off their devices to avoid short circuits and refrain from charging them until they are completely dry. Apple advises users to gently pat the device dry using a lint-free cloth and to place it in a well-ventilated area to speed up the drying process, rather than using common household remedies like rice.
Seeking professional assistance is best if your iPhone has become extremely wet. Apple advises going to an Apple Store or to connecting with the Apple customer care executive. These experts possess the technical know-how and knowledge to accurately assess the extent of the damage and make the necessary repairs for iPhones.
That was all for what Apple had to say about the rice-drying method for smartphones. So, if you ever face an issue related to water damage to any of your smartphones, please visit the authorized service centre or get help from customer care before performing any remedies.
