Ever since Microsoft launched Windows, it continues to be the most popular operating system in the world. But the paradigm shift happened over the past few years showed people love portable devices than bulky desktops and laptops. That’s how smartphones came into our lives.
Google took advantage of the situation and came up with an open source mobile platform named Android. Within a few years, it has grabbed the largest market share to be the popular mobile OS.
StatCounter, a web stat analytics firm published a report that Android has outclassed Windows to be the popular OS on every device (computers and mobiles) in terms of internet usage.
Android has Become the Most Popular OS in the World
It hasn’t been so long since Android went live as compared to the age of Windows OS. Microsoft has managed to get tons of users simply because of the easiness their platform offered. The Graphical User Interface (GUI) was the primary thing that got people attracted to Windows at first. Then, they went on to improving many things in different versions.
Until February 2017, Windows was the popular operating system. But the March’s report StatCounter published this month shows that Android has outperformed Windows with a narrow 0.02 percentage.
StatCounter collects data from devices connected to the internet. The trackers on websites are able to understand the behavior of their audiences including the OS they use. That’s how StatCounter collects the data needed for the research. They have used the data from about 2.5 million sites with well over 15 billion page views.
When it comes to the overall internet usage, Android has 37.93% share whereas Windows has 37.91%. And, the chart shows both iOS and Mac as well. Obviously, they lag a lot behind Android and Windows.

The analytics firm qualified this happening as an end of the era and a milestone in the tech industry.
What does this report show? Well, the evident conclusion is the interesting increment in the number of smartphones all around the globe. People now use smartphones to connect to the internet rather than desktops or laptops.
Even if Android beats Windows in the overall statistics, things aren’t the same in individual stats. In North America and Europe Windows is still far ahead of Android in the usage.
Nonetheless, Windows is still the most popular desktop operating system. Of all the desktop computers working in the world, Windows runs on almost 84% of them.
But it is worth noting that Microsoft makes profits from Android devices by getting manufacturers to pay royalties through patenting deals.
